Why does my Node.js app use way more memory in production than in local testing?

I have a Node.js API running on a DigitalOcean Droplet. Locally it sits around 80MB of memory usage under load testing, but in production on the same size Droplet it climbs steadily to 400MB+ and eventually gets OOM killed.

I am not doing anything obviously different between environments, same code, same dependencies. What should I actually check to figure out why memory behaves so differently between local and production?

Hi there, This gap almost always comes down to one of a few specific differences between local testing and real production traffic. Local load testing is usually short and synthetic. A quick load test runs for minutes with repetitive, predictable requests. Production runs for days with unpredictable request patterns, which is exactly the condition that exposes a slow memory leak. 80MB under a 5-minute test and 400MB after 3 days of real traffic is consistent with a leak that a short test simply never runs long enough to reveal. Check for the classic culprits first: Event listeners not being removed. If you are attaching listeners per-request rather than once at startup, they accumulate: node --inspect server.js Then use Chrome DevTools to take heap snapshots an hour apart and diff them. Growing arrays of the same object type between snapshots point straight at the leak. Database connection pooling misconfigured. Locally you might be running a single connection or a small pool. In production under real concurrent load, an unbounded or oversized pool can hold far more memory than you expect: const pool = new Pool({ max: 10, idleTimeoutMillis: 30000, }); Check your actual pool size against what your Droplet can handle. PM2 cluster mode multiplying memory. If you are running PM2 in cluster mode with multiple instances, each instance has its own memory footprint. Four instances at 100MB each is 400MB total, which might look like “one process using too much” when it is actually several processes summed: pm2 list pm2 monit Set a hard cap to force earlier garbage collection and at least contain the problem while you debug it: node --max-old-space-size=256 server.js For visibility going forward, install the DigitalOcean monitoring agent so you can see the actual memory trend over days rather than guessing: curl -sSL https://repos.insights.digitalocean.com/install.sh | sudo bash Watching the graph climb steadily rather than plateau is the clearest signal of a genuine leak versus just higher baseline usage under real load.
