How should I deploy a browser-based Instagram media downloader on DigitalOcean?

I’m working on a browser-based tool that processes publicly available Instagram media, and I’m interested in the best way to deploy this type of application on DigitalOcean.

The application needs to handle user-submitted URLs, process media efficiently, and return files without putting excessive load on the server. I’m particularly interested in recommendations for server sizing, temporary file storage, caching, bandwidth management, and security.

For context, one project I’m working with is Indown.mobi, so I’d be interested in hearing from developers who have experience deploying similar media-processing applications on DigitalOcean.

Would a basic Droplet with Nginx and a separate object-storage setup be a reasonable architecture, or would you recommend another approach?

Heya, a Droplet + Nginx + Spaces is the right shape. But the thing that decides whether this is a $20/mo project or a $400/mo project isn’t the Droplet size — it’s how many times a byte crosses your network boundary. Get that right first, then size the box The data-flow decision For a media fetcher you have two patterns: Straight proxy. User submits URL → your app fetches upstream → streams the body through to the client with Content-Disposition: attachment. Nothing is stored. Simple, no storage lifecycle, no stale-cache bugs. Every byte crosses your Droplet twice (inbound free, outbound billed). Your Droplet IP does all the upstream fetching, so it’s the IP that gets rate-limited or blocked. Fetch once → Spaces → presigned URL. App fetches upstream, PUTs to a Spaces bucket, returns a short-TTL presigned GET (or a CDN URL). The client pulls from Spaces/CDN, never from you. Droplet → Spaces in the same region is not billed against your Droplet transfer, so the expensive leg moves onto the Spaces allowance. Repeat requests for the same media cost you zero upstream fetches. Adds an object lifecycle you have to actually manage. I’d run 2 with a fallback to 1. Most submissions are one-shot unique URLs, so on paper caching looks pointless — but the traffic distribution for this class of tool is brutally long-tailed. A post goes viral and you get thousands of requests for the same file in an hour. Pattern 2 turns that from “thousands of upstream fetches that get you blocked” into one. Critically, pair it with a single-flight lock (Redis/Valkey SET key NX EX 30). Without it, 200 concurrent requests for one viral URL become 200 simultaneous upstream fetches. That’s how these services fall over — not gradual load, but a thundering herd on one object. Sizing This workload is network- and concurrency-bound, not CPU-bound, as long as you’re not transcoding. If you’re remuxing or re-encoding video, throw this section out — you’re now CPU-bound and want a dedicated-CPU Droplet plus a real job queue. For pure fetch-and-relay: A Basic Droplet at 2 vCPU / 2–4 GB ($18–24/mo range) handles a genuinely large amount of streaming traffic in Go or Node, provided you stream and never buffer whole files in memory. The ceiling you hit first is transfer allowance, not CPU. Included outbound scales with plan size and is pooled across your whole team, with overage at $0.01/GiB. Check the current per-plan numbers on the pricing page. Start at one Droplet. Add a Load Balancer for TLS termination when you go to two — don’t build for horizontal scale you don’t have yet. The specific thing that kills undersized boxes here is unbounded concurrency. Use a bounded worker pool (buffered channel semaphore in Go, p-limit in Node) sized to something like 20–50 in-flight upstream fetches, and shed load with 503 past that. If you genuinely must buffer (e.g. you need the full length before upload), use tmpfs (/dev/shm) with an explicit size cap so exhaustion is a clean error instead of a dead server, or a separate DO Volume mounted at /var/cache/app. Cap it in code too: a hard MaxBytes on the read. Refuse anything over your limit rather than discovering it after you’ve already pulled 2 GB. Run a reaper on a timer, and set a Spaces lifecycle rule to expire cached objects (24–72h is usually plenty). Security — this is the part people get wrong You are building a service whose entire purpose is fetching an arbitrary user-supplied URL from your server. That is textbook SSRF, and on a cloud Droplet it is not theoretical: 169.254.169.254 serves your instance metadata, and people put secrets in user-data. Minimum controls: Allowlist hostnames. Only the domains you actually need (instagram.com , cdninstagram.com , fbcdn.net ). Deny by default. Not a blocklist — a blocklist is always incomplete. Handle redirects manually. CheckRedirect in Go, redirect: ‘manual’ in fetch. Re-run the full validation on every hop. An allowed host that 302s to http://169.254.169.254/ defeats a check you only did once. Validate the resolved IP, not just the hostname. Resolve DNS yourself and reject private, loopback, link-local, and CGNAT ranges before you connect. Otherwise DNS rebinding walks straight past step 1. Hard caps on everything: connect timeout, total timeout, response size, redirect count. Strip and normalize the filename before it reaches Content-Disposition. User-controlled filenames plus header interpolation is a response-splitting bug. If you want defense in depth, run the fetcher as a separate process in a container with no network access except an egress proxy that enforces the allowlist. Then a bug in your URL parser isn’t a full SSRF. Abuse and bandwidth control This category of tool attracts automated abuse at a rate that surprises people. Someone will point a scraper at your endpoint and hand you a bandwidth bill. On top of that: Turnstile/hCaptcha on the submit endpoint for anonymous users. Unpopular, but it’s the difference between serving users and funding a scraper. A daily per-IP byte budget in Redis, not just a request-rate limit. Rate limits don’t stop someone pulling 500 large videos slowly. Set a billing alert. The first sign of abuse should not be the invoice. One caveat if you’re considering Cloudflare: proxying large non-HTML file downloads through the free plan is the kind of thing that gets a polite email. Serve the actual media from the Spaces CDN and keep Cloudflare on your app shell. Operational reality Separate your fetch tier from your web tier once you have traffic. Upstream blocks land on whatever IP is doing the fetching; you want that to be a Reserved IP you can rotate without touching the box serving your users. Instrument by error class, not just uptime: upstream 403 vs 404 vs timeout vs parse-failure. When the upstream changes its HTML or signing scheme, the shape of your error mix tells you within minutes. A plain uptime check will show green while 100% of requests fail. Track egress GiB/day as a first-class metric. It’s your actual cost driver and your earliest abuse signal. Heya, KFSys already covered the architecture, sizing, caching, and SSRF security about as thoroughly as this gets, so I will not repeat any of that. One thing worth adding before you build any of it: verify your Droplet can actually reach Instagram at meaningful volume in the first place. Meta’s anti-bot systems treat datacenter IP ranges, including DigitalOcean’s, very differently from residential traffic. Reports from people doing this kind fetching in 2026 describe datacenter IPs getting flagged well before any rate limit kicks in, sometimes on the very first request, and even when a request does go through, the practical ceiling before 403s start is much lower than what you would get from a residential IP. That is a property of the source IP’s ASN, not something you can architect around with better caching or a bigger Droplet. Practical implication: before committing to the Droplet plus Nginx plus Spaces build KFSys described, spin up a small test Droplet in the region you are targeting and run a handful of real fetches against Instagram’s CDN domains from it over a day or two. If you start seeing 403s quickly, that is a signal the fetch tier needs to sit behind something other than a bare DigitalOcean IP, a residential or mobile proxy pool in front of the fetch tier, for example, which changes the cost model KFSys laid out since that proxy layer is not free. Also worth checking, since the question mentions publicly available media specifically: Instagram’s oEmbed endpoint returns official embed data for public posts without touching the scraping path at all. It will not hand you the original file the way a direct fetch does, but if a thumbnail or embed-quality asset is ever acceptable for part of your use case, that path sidesteps the IP-reputation problem entirely for that slice of traffic.
